Shopify Contact Form Not Working
Your Shopify store's contact form submits without errors, but the messages never arrive — or customers report the form won't send at all.
Common signs of this issue
- You test the form yourself and never receive the email.
- A customer mentions they messaged you through the site and got no reply — and you never saw the message.
- The form shows an error on submit, or the send button does nothing.
- Messages used to arrive and quietly stopped — often after changing themes or email providers.
- Submissions arrive but land in spam, or come from a strange "no-reply" address you didn't expect.
Safe checks you can do yourself
None of these require sharing passwords with anyone.
- Know where Shopify sends form messages: to your store's sender email (Settings → Notifications in the Shopify admin). Check that address is one you actually read — many stores still point at a founder's old address.
- Search that inbox — including spam and any 'Promotions' tab — for "New customer message" or your store's name. Very often the messages have been arriving all along, just filed somewhere unread.
- Submit a test through your own form from a personal address, writing a normal-looking sentence (one-word tests like "test" are more likely to be spam-filtered), and note the exact time.
- If you changed your business email provider (say, moved to Google Workspace or Microsoft 365) around when messages stopped, the mailbox behind the notification address may have changed — re-check which mailbox actually receives that address's mail.
- Check the form on your phone as a customer would — some theme customizations break the form only on mobile, which is where most shoppers are.
- If the form shows a reCAPTCHA/hCaptcha, complete a test yourself; overly strict spam protection can silently eat legitimate submissions.
- If you use a page-builder or forms app from the Shopify App Store instead of the theme's built-in form, open that app's dashboard — most keep their own log of submissions, which tells you whether the form or the email is the broken half.
What this usually means
On Shopify, form problems split cleanly in two: the form isn't sending (theme or app problem — an error appears, or the app's log shows nothing) or the email isn't arriving (notification address, spam filtering, or a changed mailbox). The app-log and test-submission checks above tell you which half you're in.
The most common real-world cause is mundane: notifications going to an old or unmonitored address, or to spam. Shopify's messages come 'on behalf of' your store from Shopify's servers, and some mail filters distrust that pattern — especially if your domain's email authentication (SPF/DKIM) isn't set up for it.
The second most common: a theme update or customization broke the form's code, so it looks fine but never submits. That's why testing as a customer, on mobile, matters — store owners rarely use their own contact form.
What not to do
- Don't assume no messages means no interest — a silent broken form and an empty inbox look identical from your side. Test it; don't infer it.
- Don't switch themes just to fix a form — that's a big disruption for what's usually a small setting or app fix.
- Don't add two or three form apps at once to 'see which works' — overlapping form scripts conflict with each other.
- Don't leave the fix unverified: after any change, always run one real test submission end-to-end and confirm it lands in the right inbox.
When to get help
A contact form is a revenue pipe — on a store, every lost message is potentially a lost sale or an unanswered complaint that becomes a chargeback. If the checks above haven't found it within an hour, a Shopify-experienced freelancer can usually trace form-to-inbox in one short session, and setting up proper email authentication at the same time fixes the spam-folder problem for good.

Frequently asked questions
Where do Shopify contact form submissions go?
To your store's sender/notification email address, set under Settings → Notifications in the Shopify admin. There's no built-in submissions inbox in Shopify itself — if that email address isn't monitored, messages effectively vanish.
Why do my Shopify form emails go to spam?
Shopify sends them on your store's behalf from its own servers, which some filters distrust — especially without SPF/DKIM email authentication on your domain. Marking one as 'not spam' helps your own inbox; authentication fixes it properly.
Can I see past form submissions I missed?
Only if they arrived somewhere: search the notification inbox and its spam folder. The theme's built-in form keeps no log — one reason a forms app with its own submissions dashboard is worth considering for stores.
Does Shopify's contact form have spam protection?
Yes — hCaptcha/reCAPTCHA is built in on Shopify's forms, and it occasionally blocks real customers who fail or skip the challenge. If customers report the form 'won't send,' test the captcha flow yourself on a phone.
My form worked last month and just stopped. What changed?
The usual suspects, in order: a theme update or edit broke the form's code; the notification address's mailbox changed (new email provider); or a spam filter started catching them. Your test submission plus a spam-folder search identifies which within minutes.
